Handcarry / On-Board Courier

The shipment doesn’t leave your courier’s hands. Ever.

On-board courier service for time-critical, high-value, and sensitive shipments. One person, one package, door to door — with unbroken chain of custody from origin to receiving desk.

When a shipment is too critical, too sensitive, or too regulated to enter a cargo stream, Strata Critical’s handcarry service deploys a dedicated courier who accompanies your package personally — from pickup through customs clearance to final delivery. No sort facilities, no cargo holds, no unmonitored handoffs. Your shipment travels with a person who has one job: getting it there.

WHAT IS ON-BOARD COURIER (OBC) / HANDCARRY?

Your Cargo is Our Personal Responsibility

On-board courier (OBC) — also known as handcarry or personal courier service — is the highest level of individual shipment security available in the logistics industry. A trained courier physically picks up your package, travels with it as carry-on or checked baggage on a commercial or charter flight, clears customs on arrival, and delivers it directly to your recipient.

Handcarry is ideal when:

Chain-of-custody documentation must be continuous and person-verified
The shipment requires temperature management that a cargo hold cannot guarantee
Regulatory compliance requires a named individual to maintain custody (e.g., controlled substances, investigational products)
Commercial cargo clearance timelines would compromise delivery windows
The shipment is high-value, irreplaceable, or involves patient-specific medical material
The cargo is small enough to accompany a passenger but too important to enter standard freight
How It Works

One Courier. One Package. No Exceptions.

1

Pickup

Courier meets your team at origin
Our courier meets your team at the origin location — whether a hospital, radiopharmacy, clinical site, laboratory, or corporate location. Packaging is inspected and accepted under the courier’s personal custody. A timestamped custody record is initiated at the moment of pickup.

2

Transit

Fastest available routing
The courier travels on the fastest available commercial routing, or on a charter flight when commercial options don’t meet the delivery window. Your shipment is either carried in-cabin as personal luggage or checked as baggage under the courier’s direct supervision.

3

Customs

Streamlined as accompanied baggage
Because the courier travels as a commercial passenger, shipments clear customs as accompanied baggage rather than formal air cargo — dramatically reducing clearance dwell time for qualifying shipments.

4

Delivery

Direct to receiving party
The courier delivers directly to the receiving party and obtains a signature. Custody is transferred at the point of delivery and documented in the chain-of-custody record.
Handcarry vs Air Charter

Not Every Urgent Shipment Needs a
Whole Aircraft.

Rule of thumb: If your shipment fits in a bag and can travel on a commercial flight, handcarry is often faster and more cost-effective than charter. If your cargo is large, restricted, or headed somewhere with limited airline service, charter is the answer. Strata Critical can advise which solution fits your specific situation.
